Temple Texas has had numerous nicknames in its past. It was named Mudville for its thick blackland prairie soil; It was called Tanglefoot because of the mud and for its reputation as a wild and crazy frontier town. It was also called Ratsville due to the number of rats in town. However, the face of Temple Texas was soon to change. The railroad brought women, children, crystal, china, and all the influences of a growing society. Many families loaded their furniture, tools, animals and sometimes even themselves onto the trains and came to Temple Texas to settle. Temple Texas grew very fast, and became "Progressive Temple" and the "Prairie Queen." It also became known as the "City of Trees" because of Mr. Goodrich Jones, a resident who is the father of Arbor Day in Texas and the Texas Forestry Association.

Temple, Texas was established in 1881 and named for the chief engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad, Bernard Moore Temple. As Temple grew its first years of growth were spent as a railroad town on the Gulf serving numerous railroad lines. Temple Texas is located on Interstate 35, an hour north of Austin. Temple intersects with U.S. 190/State Hwy 36, a segment of the Ports to Plains Highway connecting the state to coastal ports. Temple serves as the manufacturing, retail and business center of Central Texas. Temple Texas has one of the Southwest's leading medical centers, Scott & White Hospital and the largest Veterans Administration Health care center in Texas. Temple also leads with medical and medical research facilities. Almost $200 million in new medical services, research and medical education projects are currently under construction in Temple, more than any other city in Texas. Temple Texas is clearly a leader in manufacturing and medical research.
